Things to do in Kefalonia

Argostoli

Argostoli has been the capital of the island since 1757. It is amphitheatrically built around the Koutavos lagoon and is a relatively young town being almost totally rebuilt from scratch after the earthquake in 1953. The town has many tourist attractions and sights for the visitors, including museums, monuments and natural geological phenomena to name a few.

World-famous beaches

You’ve probably seen these beaches before on posters and postcards or in scenes from films, because they’re among the most gorgeous in the Mediterranean. They cover all shades of blue and green water lapping against pure white sand or smooth round pebbles.

Myrtos, perhaps the most spectacular, lies at the bottom of towering limestone cliffs. But don’t miss Petani and Skala. Or Poros, where the forest is reflected in the sea, intensifying the colour. Makry Gialos, whose turquoise waters rock to the music of beach bars, gives a cosmopolitan touch. And Xi, where pale green waves meet fine red sand, offers an unforgettable change of pace. The beaches of Kefalonia are waiting to be discovered.

Assos:

Many people think this tiny port is the prettiest settlement on the island. You’ll catch your first glimpse of it from above. Built on a narrow strip of land, its few houses hug the shore, keeping their traditional Venetian-era character amidst a host of tall plane, poplar, palm and olive trees. The 16th century Venetian castle looming over it is well worth the climb up.

Fiskardo:

Another enchanting miniature, the picturesque port of Fiskardo is hardly a secret to sailors and celebrity yacht owners. But landlubbers love it too for its charming 18th century buildings, which give it a feeling of timelessness that transcends the cheerful hubbub in its popular fish restaurants and boutiques.

Myrtos beach is famed for its crystal clear blue water and white sand. Ιt is rated in the top ten beaches of Europe and in the World. It's astoundingly beautiful, just like on the picture postcards, and featured in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz. Backed by steep limestone cliffs, this two-kilometer stretch of white shingle gives onto a moody sea, which changes colour from milky turquoise to indigo with the swirling of the waves. Facilities on the beach include a snack bar, sunbeds and parasail hire, showers, W.C'S and telephone. Whilst development is restricted within the beach vacinity, there are a couple of nice Tavernas at the start of the access road down to the beach in Divarata.
Fiskardo is a picturesque village in the northern part of Kefalonia. It links the island, by boat to Lefkas, Ithaca and Astakos. Fiskardo is the only village that remained virtually intact after the earthquake of 1953 and so it has kept the traditional architecture of the island. The area was declared a historical site and preserved as such giving the impression that time has stopped. It is one of the most cosmopolitan parts of the island with celebrities both Greek and foreign visiting the area. The large marina accommodates many boats and Yachts. And there is the chance to explore the beaches around that are only accessible by boat. A quaint village with many shops, taverns and bars all within walking distance make this place a popular destination.
Assos is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages of Kefalonia. It is built amphitheatrically around the peninsula with steep slopes crossed by a narrow strip of land where the Venetian castle stands, another thing that makes this area famous. There is a small beach at the centre of the village making the area look more like a lake because of its geographic nature. The water is shallow and the bottom is paved with large pebbles. In the village you can find a variety of shops and taverns also you will notice that the houses are built with traditional architecture and are covered with bougainvilleas filling the place with a heady aroma. Here in Assos you can hire boats enabling you to explore the many small coves and beaches only accesible from the sea.
Melissani cave is located close to the town of Sami, about 20km from Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. It is without a doupt one of the most significant places for tourist to visit in Kefalonia. Surprisingly there is a lake inside the cave that has trees and forests surrounding it. The sight is simply magical. The cave itself has the shape of a B with 2 chambers separated with an island in the middle. The roof of one of the chambers has caved in centuries ago letting now the sunlight shine into the lake and making it a breath-taking sight. When the sun is right above at noon, the sunlight hitting the turquoise-blue waters create a magical illusion and the whole cave of Melissani suddenly fills with blue light. At noon is the best time to visit the cave and enjoy a relaxing boat-ride with a traditional boat at the lake. The cave of Melissani is 36m high, 40m wide and 3.5m long. A balcony was built on top of the cave for tourists to get a spectacular view of the inside from the top. The lake has a depth of 20 to 30m. There is also stalactites and stalagmites in the cave that enhance even more its beauty. The cave of Melissani leaves a memorable and lasting impression to everyone who visits it.
Drogarati cave, which is close to Sami, was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. The cave's depth is 60m. from the ground level and it is open for the public since 1963. It's got many stalactites and stalagmites created from the rain. In the big hall of the cave (900m2), call "Sala of Apotheosis" because of its perfect acoustics, are organized music and other shows.
